CHICAGO -- A 2002 lawsuit by former Chicago Bulls guard Michael Jordan claiming he was extorted by a woman with whom he had been intimate was re-filed on Thursday. The lawsuit by Jordan against Karla Knafel was re-filed in Cook County Circuit Court. It claimed Knafel extorted Jordan into paying $250,000 for not publicly exposing his relationship with her, then demanded $5 million under a purported second agreement that Jordan claimed did not exist.
The lawsuit, first filed Oct. 23, 2002, asked for an order declaring that Knafel's demand for $5 million was unenforceable. After the suit was originally filed, Knafel countersued, claiming Jordan not only paid her $250,000, he promised to give her $5 million after he retired from basketball in return for her not filing a paternity suit and for keeping their affair confidential. It later was found the pregnancy was not from relations with Jordan.
After hearing initial pleadings on Jordan's request for an immediate declaratory judgment in his favor, Circuit Court Judge Richard A. Siebel dismissed both Jordan's suit and the countersuit. The Illinois Appellate Court reversed that ruling on Feb. 3 and sent the case back to Circuit Court, saying facts from a trial help determine if Jordan's suit showed an "actual controversy" and whether an enforceable contract existed between Knafel and Jordan. A hearing on motions in the case was scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday before Siebel.Information provided by City News Service.
