CHICAGO -- Crystal Lake police said on Thursday that thieves are breaking into garages -- and taking only the beer.
"We were kind of upset, more shocked than anything else," said Jim Stone, who had five cases of beer stolen from his garage.NBC5's Alex Perez reported that Stone was not alone, as police said several other people in northwest suburban Crystal Lake and the surrounding area have reported alcohol missing from their garages."We start looking around to see if anything else is missing, and after looking at each other and talking for a little while, we realized, no, that was it," Stone said.Crystal Lake Police Chief David Linder said he's investigating four similar cases and said he believed the culprits may be teenagers who don't understand how serious it could be to steal from a home."Juveniles are usually involved in it, and don't think how serious a crime it is," Linder said. "It's a burglary, which is a felony, which, upon conviction, can lead to a three- to seven-year stay in the penitentiary."Stone said he is being extra careful to make sure his alcohol isn't stolen and that it doesn't end up in the wrong hands, Perez reported.Police said they have arrested two teenagers for allegedly stealing alcohol from a garage. Linder said the best way to avoid being a victim of a burglary is to always keep doors locked. Police also recommend talking to neighbors the moment something disappears.
