CHICAGO -- Mayor Richard Daley was heated when asked about a new move to possibly reverse the ban on foie gras."Are we going to start to outlaw what everyone should eat in the city of Chicago? The City Council will be sitting in your kitchen to determine what you should eat on Sunday after church," Daley said, putting his hands to his head in exasperation.
Some aldermen said they are reconsidering their vote given the international ridicule over Chicago's ban.Aldermen Burton Natarus and Bernard Stone both voted for the ban when it was approved in April. But they revealed Tuesday that they've filed a repeal proposal.Natarus said the ban on the delicacy, which is made of duck and goose liver, has made the city a laughingstock nationwide. The repeal proposal now goes to the City Council's Health Committee. If it's approved there, a simple majority of the full council could make it final.Mayor Richard M. Daley has called the foie gras ban the "silliest law" the council has ever passed.Proponents of the ban say the force-feeding of animals required to make foie gras is cruel.
