CHICAGO -- Some residents in Lake Forest said three not-so-little pigs owned by one of their neighbors are creating a big stink -- and want them out of the northern suburb.
The pigs' owner, Estelle Walgreen, said she loves her pet pigs and has made a home for them out of her garage. However, 250 other residents have signed a petition that calls for the animals' removal, NBC5's Anita Padilla reported. The residents said that the pigs are disruptive to the tranquility of the community. One neighbor has filed a lawsuit against Walgreen over the issue."Those neighbors have taken certain steps with respect to trying to get rid of the pigs," said Charles Byrum, Walgreen's attorney. No citations have been issued against Walgreen, Padilla reported. Walgreen said she's owned the pigs in Lake Forest for 13 years, but at another address. It was only since she moved to her new home that the pigs became an issue.Neighbors said the pigs are noisy and smelly. Lake Forest does not currently have an ordinance that addresses pot-bellied pigs, but the issue will be discussed at the next Lake Forest City Council meeting in August. The pigs, named Porky, Pinky and Cooper, live with Walgreen on her $3 million estate. Walgreen and her two young children consider the Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs to be part of the family, and make sure the pigs are cared for properly."There's always one individual that's devoted to feeding and caring for the pigs," Byrum said. "Cleaning up after the pigs, making sure that their straw is always fresh, (and) bathing them at least once a week."
