The luncheon lasted a little less than two hours at the Winnetka mansion of insurance tycoon Patrick Ryan. The women dined on cold lobster, tomato aspic, a salad and fruit tarts for dessert."It was just a beautiful, momentous day -- something I'll never forget," said Beverly Bystricky, who dined with the Bush family. The event was billed as a mother-daughter luncheon. Tickets cost $3,000 for each mother and $2,000 for each daughter. The women who showed up seemed pleased by the occasion."(Laura Bush) talked about the women, the women's rights, how the opportunities have become more available to them and the women who start their private businesses, and how President Bush is helping to make all this possible," said attendee Jean Forsythe.Kramer asked other attendees how the Bush twins acted at the fund-raiser."They were great. They were really lovely speakers, and it seemed like they were very lovely girls," Melissa Bernadette said. Some of the women even had a little time to talk with the Bush girls about fashion.Attendee Cindy Galvin said when she asked one of the twins whether her jacket was by Lela Rose, the Bush daughter responded that it was and could be worn with anything, even jeans."I said, 'The clothes must be a great part of this,'" Galvin said. "And she goes, 'The clothes are definitely the best part of this.'"Organizers said along with the fun, the luncheon was about real politics and showed the president is doing well among women."There's a lot of issues that matter to people, and we may not agree with the president on all of the issues, but in these times when we are under threat, you want someone who can be a leader and be steady," an event organizer said. This was the first time the Bush twins have made a political appearance in Illinois.
Bush Daughters Chat About Mom
NBC5's Michael Sneed found out what Jenna and Barbara Bush talked about during their Friday luncheon. The Bush twins talked mostly about their mother. They said their mother has a great sense of humor. Sneed said the twins brought up the time they had a slumber party in the first grade, and their mother wound up dressed in pajamas, dancing in a Congo line with the other girls to the Pointer Sisters' song, "Fire."The Bush daughters said that at the luncheon, Laura Bush told the women she gets a lot of comments about her hair, but the most memorable one was by a 10-year-old Texas girl who wanted the first lady to let her hair grow out and color the tips.Copyright 2004 by NBC5.com.
