CHICAGO -- A 15-year-old boy was killed and another male wounded when shots rang out behind the teen's West Pullman neighborhood home Monday night on the Far South Side.
Two males were standing on a porch behind a building in the 100 block of West 116th Street about 10:10 p.m. Monday when a gunman came out of a gangway and began firing shots at the two, police News Affairs Officer David Banks said.
Percy Rounds, of West 116th Street, was fatally shot at his home and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head. A second male, who family members identified as Rounds' cousin, 17-year-old Adam Spaulding, was shot in the thigh and taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Banks said.NBC5'S Natalie Martinez reported that Rounds was rarely allowed outside by the aunt he shared the home with.
"What really hurts is I had just seen him," said Earl Frank III, Rounds' cousin. "Now, I can't see him anymore."NBC5's Kim Vatis reported that, according to family, the two had just finished dinner and stepped out onto the back porch no comma when a gunman came out of a gangway and began shooting. Witnesses said they thought the gun was fired five or six times. In an exclusive interview with Martinez, Spaulding described what happened."I heard a shot, and I kind of ducked and turned around," Spaulding said. "I saw whoever the other person was just standing right there by the gateway. Finally, I dove, and that's when I got hit in my leg.""Percy was right here, and my other nephew was able to open the door and fall in," said Paula Brothers, Rounds' aunt. "He was like, 'Auntie, we've been shot.' But Adam said, 'Auntie, don't worry about me -- get Percy.'""My little cousin wouldn't respond," Adam Spaulding said. "That's why I was trying to focus all of the attention on him, like why he's not responding to me."Rounds family said he was in summer school finishing the eighth grade, Martinez reported, and had just found God. He would have begun high school in the fall.A motive for the shooting has not been determined and no one was in custody.Their aunt said the two were good kids, and doubted that they were targeted."Of course they came after the wrong person, because this was a kid," Brothers said through tears."This was a kid," she repeated. "He wasn't a bad child. This was a kid. He gave himself to the Lord. He goes to church regularly. Every Sunday, in church, Bible study. So he wasn't on the wrong track. He was on the right track."Brothers said she doesn't believe he had any gang affiliation, and doesn't understand why he was slain.Violence has been frequent in the West Pullman neighborhood in the past month, Vatis said.On Sunday night, a man and woman were shot less than a block away from where Rounds was gunned down, police said. Just after 7 p.m., someone standing in the street opened fire on a man and woman near 60 W. 116th St., according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. Both were taken to area hospitals in stable condition, police said.Just over a month ago, 14-year-old Jeremy Jones was fatally shot about three blocks south of where Rounds was killed in the West Pullman neighborhood. No one has yet been charged in his death.Jones, of South Yates Blvd., was shot in the head June 18 at West 119th Street and South Perry Avenue and was pronounced dead at Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn a day later. He had just graduated eighth grade from Gompers Elementary Fine Arts Opt School and was set to start at Fenger High School in the fall, Chicago Public Schools spokesman Michael Vaughn said.Calumet Area detectives are investigating all three incidents.
