Former Oak Lawn Officer Faces Drug Charges
Officer Also Accused Of Shaking Down Immigrants For Cash

CHICAGO -- A former Oak Lawn officer accused of shaking down Hispanic motorists for cash is back in the Cook County Jail after being picked up on a drug charge.Steven Harrison, 26, already faced charges of intimidation, official misconduct and theft for allegedly demanding bribes of up to $250 each from as many as 14 vulnerable immigrant drivers he pulled over.He was free on bail of $100,000 when he was arrested in Chicago June 20 on drug possession charges, Cook County State's Attorney's Office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.
Details of the drug arrest were not available Thursday, but bail in the new case was set at $55,000, Simonton said.Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli declined to comment on Harrison's latest bust.Harrison's bail was revoked Saturday morning by a judge, and he has been in custody since, Cook County sheriff's police spokesman Bill Cunningham said.Thursday, Judge Rosemary Higgins said she would reconsider Harrison's bail Friday morning.The former rookie police officer is accused of targeting immigrant workers at an Alsip business park during traffic stops from Sept. 18 to 27.He was dismissed from the police force Oct. 19, with Oak Lawn Police Chief Bill Villanova describing him as "an embarrassment."According to court records, Harrison allegedly told his victims, "This is how we do things in the suburbs."-- SouthtownStar
