Nearly 100 Illinois Troops Heading To Afghanistan

CRESTWOOD, Ill. -- A deployment ceremony has been scheduled for roughly 100 soldiers from the Illinois Army National Guard who are set to begin a year of service in Afghanistan.Approximately 70 soldiers from the Illinois Army National Guard’s Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery and approximately 25 soldiers from the Headquarters, Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery will deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the Army said in a release.The June 14 ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Crestwood Armory, 13838 S. Springfield, in Robbins, Ill.
The Illinois Army National Guard will send about 220 soldiers to Afghanistan to provide security forces for police mentor teams. The team consists of four different Illinois Army National Guard units: Battery A and B, 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery from Sycamore and Crestwood; Headquarters, Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery from Chicago; and Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry from Effingham.The security team recently completed 21 days of annual training in Fort McCoy, Wis., and the Marseilles Training Center in Marseilles. During annual training, soldiers completed weapons qualification, driver training, combat life saver course and other pre-mobilization tasks. After the deployment ceremony, the unit will travel to Fort Bragg, N.C. where they will focus on more specific police mentor training skills.
