Police Seek Men Who Fled After Fatal I-90 Crash

ELGIN, Ill. -- Police are searching for two men who were in a white van involved in a deadly hit-and-run on the Interstate 90 tollway near Route 31.Luis Cabrales, a 5-year-old Elgin boy, and Maria D. Guadarrama, a 57-year-old woman from Mexico, died after the SUV they were riding in rolled over on the tollway Friday night, police said.The white van thought to be responsible for the crash fled before crews arrived, police said. Officers have been gathering information about the white van since late Friday.
The driver of the SUV and one of the vehicle's passengers fled on foot before crews arrived. According to police reports, Elgin K-9 units searched the Tyler Mill Creek Park area, but found no definitive track on the Expedition's driver or the passenger.Police continue to investigate what prompted the driver and passenger to flee the SUV. Police have not released their identities.Police said a white van cut off a Lincoln Town Car driven by 41-year-old Kevin M. Cooke at about 8:46 p.m. Cooke's vehicle swerved into the back of a Ford Expedition, and the force of the impact caused the SUV to roll over, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Paul Carlos said."Several" of the seven occupants were ejected from the vehicle, Carlos said. Two of those ejected, Cabrales and Guadarrama, were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, where they were pronounced dead.Two children who were inside the SUV were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin. A 5-year-old was airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and was listed in critical condition, Carlos said. The other child was treated for minor injuries. Their names have not been released.The seventh passenger in the SUV, Augstin Delgato, 30, of Marengo, was wearing a seat belt and had no injuries, Carlos said.Cooke, the driver of the Town Car, was not injured.Police said no charges had been filed. The crash, which blocked eastbound traffic on Interstate 90 for two hours, remains under investigation, according to police.
