UPDATED: 10:10 pm CDT April 1, 2008

The new Cook County sales tax went into effect on Friday.

The sales tax, issued by the General Assembly to fund the RTA and CTA, goes up by a quarter of a percent and a half of a percent in the collar counties.

Also effective Friday, property sellers in the city of Chicago will have to pay a combined real estate transfer tax to the city. The amount is an additional $3 for every $1,000.

This summer, sales tax approved by the Cook County Board will raise the county's sales tax by 1 percent to 10.5 percent.

Chicago's sales tax will be the highest in the nation.
