CHICAGO -- The new Cook County sales tax went into effect on Friday.The sales tax, issued by the General Assembly to fund the RTA and CTA, goes up by a quarter of a percent and a half of a percent in the collar counties.Also effective Friday, property sellers in the city of Chicago will have to pay a combined real estate transfer tax to the city. The amount is an additional $3 for every $1,000.
This summer, sales tax approved by the Cook County Board will raise the county's sales tax by 1 percent to 10.5 percent.Chicago's sales tax will be the highest in the nation.
