CHICAGO -- The Illinois Appellate Court on Friday upheld the largest police chase verdict ever against the Chicago Police Department. The chase happened on the Eisenhower Expressway in May 2001. A Chicago police officer lost control of his squad car while pursuing a homicide suspect. The police car then slammed into a car driven by 52-year-old Vernon Hudson, who is now paralyzed.
A jury awarded Hudson $17.6 million."The appellate court stated the city is not immune nor is it discharged from this reckless conduct in the manner it chased the suspect the night Vernon Hudson was injured," said Antonio Romanucci, Hudson's attorney. Two years after the crash, the Chicago Police Department revamped its chase policy.
