Pittsburgh, PA -- The Pittsburgh Pirates and outfielder Jason Bay have agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through 2009. As per team policy, financial terms were not released. The extension is the longest offered by the Pirates since Dave Littlefield became general manager in 2001. Bay, 27, enjoyed a solid 2005 campaign, playing in all 162 games with a .306 batting average, 32 homers and 101 runs batted in. The All Star, who also had 44 doubles and 22 stolen bases, scored 110 runs while also garnering 41 points to finish 12th in the balloting for National League MVP. In 2005, Bay also became the first player in team history to hit .300 with at least 30 home runs, 40 doubles, 20 stolen bases, 100 runs scored and 100 RBI in the same season. He was also the only major leaguer to accomplish that feat this past season. The 2004 NL Rookie of the Year, Bay was acquired by Pittsburgh in the trade that sent outfielder Brian Giles to San Diego in August 2003. In two seasons with the Pirates and one with the Padres, Bay owns a .295 batting average, 62 home runs and 197 RBI in 312 career games.
