Research: College Dangerous For Those With Drinking Predisposition

Researchers: College Dangerous For Some Students

In most cases, attending college is seen as a positive life experience. But for adolescents with a genetic predisposition to alcoholism, it could be dangerous.

Researchers analyzed surveys filled out by adolescents before they entered college, and at one and six years after starting school.

They found attending college gives students with a genetic risk for alcoholism an extra boost toward heavy drinking.

They also found teens who didn't go to college drank more in high school than their college-bound peers. However, college students drank more during their early 20s.

Experts said environments where drinking behavior is promoted can amplify the genetic risks for alcoholism -- now they plan to study how to increase the chance students will choose alternatives to drinking.

The study used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health -- a national sample and a sample of sibling pairs and twins
