Bush Re-Authorizes Cancer Program Without Funding

POSTED: 4:21 pm CDT April 20, 2007

President George W. Bush re-authorized a program Friday that helps low-income women get screened for breast and cervical cancer.

It still has to be funded, but supporters count Friday as a major victory in the fight against cancer.

Bush said it touches his heart because his mother-in-law survived cancer.

"Early detection makes treatment more effective," Bush said. "It gives hope to patients and it saves lives."

The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program has provided screenings to nearly 3 million women who otherwise couldn't afford it.

Right now, the government spends $202 million on these screenings. This new law authorizes up to $275 million.
