Driver Flees Crash That Killed Woman, 5-Year-Old Boy

SUV Carrying Seven Flips On I-90

UPDATED: 7:41 am CDT May 12, 2008

A 5-year-old Elgin boy and a woman from Mexico died after the SUV they were in flipped on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway near northwest Dundee Friday night.

Police early Monday continue searching for the SUV's driver and a passenger who fled the scene. The driver of a white van thought to be at fault in the wreck is also being sought.

Luis Cabrales, 5, and Maria D. Guadarrama, 57, were pronounced dead at Sherman Hospital in Elgin after the Ford Expedition SUV they were riding in rolled over on the tollway, police said.

At 8:46 p.m. Friday, a Lincoln Town Car driven by Kevin M. Cooke, 41, of Carpentersville, was cut off by a white van, forcing his car to swerve into the back of the Expedition. The force of the impact caused the Expedition to roll over, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Paul Carlos said.

The crash happened on I-90 at Route 31, according to ISP Tollway District Master Sgt. Brian McKinney.

The Expedition overturned, ejecting several of the seven occupants, Carlos said. Two of those ejected, Cabrales and Guadarrama, were taken to Sherman Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Before crews arrived, the driver and a passenger in the SUV fled on foot. The white van thought to be responsible for the accident also fled, police said.

Police continue to investigate what prompted the driver and passenger to flee the SUV, and officers have been gathering information about the white van since late Friday.

Cabrales, Guadarrama and two other juvenile occupants of the Expedition, whose names were not released, were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin. One of the juveniles, a 5-year-old, was airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and listed in critical condition, Carlos said. The other juvenile was treated for minor injuries.

The seventh passenger in the Expedition, Augustin Delgato, 30, of Marengo, was wearing a seat belt and had no injuries, Carlos said. Cooke, the driver of the Town Car, was not injured.

According to police reports, Elgin K-9 units assisted by searching the Tyler Mill Creek Park area but found no definitive track on the Expedition's driver or the passenger who fled the scene of the accident.

The crash blocked eastbound traffic on I-90 for two hours, according to police.

No one was in custody and no citations have been issued as of 3:30 a.m. Monday, McKinney said.
