2007 CHICAGO -- The people have spoken and the name has been chosen. The baby beluga at the Shedd Aquarium finally has a name.
NBC5 viewers have chosen Miki as the beluga's name. With only a slight bit of confusion, NBC5's Zoraida Sambolin called on a few helpers to reveal the baby's name. As each of the assistants flipped the cards to reveal the spelling of the name, large blue letters read I-K-I-M. Oops."We've got a problem," Sambolin said. After rearranging the letters among the helpers, the real reveal appeared -- M-I-K-I.Miki is an Inuit word that means "little."The name was submitted by an NBC5.com visitor, Keelin Swalve, who lives in Barcelona, Spain, and sent her suggestion online. Since the name was chosen, she becomes the winner of the NBC5 Name The Beluga contest. She'll be invited to a behind the scenes "Trainer For The Day," at the Shedd and will be given a free membership.More than 8,000 people submitted suggestions for the baby's name. For more, visit NBC5.com's Baby Beluga page.
